For Carolyn and David Cawdron, their remuera homestead is a never-ending and ever-inspiring project.

What’s the biggest compliment a son can pay his mum? Well, possibly, wanting to say “I do” in the garden of the family home. This December, in the green arena of a courtyard fringed with a Japanese box hedge, Lee Jamieson will fly over from Sydney to wed his English rose, Shiona. It means plenty of hard graft for his parents, Carolyn and David Cawdron. They’re pulling out the irises to plant hydrangeas, which will be in bloom for the occasion, and coaxing the lawn to a pristine patch. But while they may complain fervently, there’s that twinkle of undeniable pride in their eyes.
