About The Recipe A little design company

Founded in 2008, The Recipe is a little Auckland based design company started by Janice Kumar-Ward (pictured middle).

Before starting The Recipe, Janice was educated in Interior Design and Architecture in both New Zealand and Australia, obtaining a Bachelor of Design in 2004. While studying, she trained under some of the most esteemed Textile Agents in the industry, including textile agent Patrea Burrows Pty Ltd (Sydney) and Rex Godso of Textilia Ltd (Auckland).

On graduating Janice gained extensive industry knowledge in her five years working with prestigious Interior Architecture firm Martin Hughes and affiliated company Designsource. During her time with these companies, she gained a number of accolades including a Best Award for the interior at Cable Bay Vineyard (Waiheke Island) and industry nominations for her work on the Westin Hotel (Auckland Viaduct) and two other private residential projects as Finishes Designer for Stewart Harris, Paul Macintosh and John Hughes.

Since The Recipe’s inception, Janice has designed an extensive number of versatile interiors throughout the country from the most elegant urban residences to a five star lodge in the Bay of Islands. In addition to residential and hospitality based assignments, Janice has designed noted corporate settings such as the recent refurbishment of heritage rooms at the Auckland Town Hall, as well as numerous innovative commercial projects like Mantells on the Water.

Branching into styling, Janice continues to showcase her talents regularly contributing to publications such as Life and Leisure, Your Home and Garden, Homestyle and Real Living magazine, as well as food styling books like Food Heroes by Simon Farrell-Green.

Whatever the project, whether it be production for a magazine, designing new interiors, sourcing textiles or sprucing up a piece of real estate, Janice has the ability to mold her creative aesthetic to  meet both the functional and visual requirements of her clients. This has resulted in an ever-increasing catalogue of exquisitely completed projects and elated clients.

Season Two of TV3′s The Block NZ recently invited Janice to be a 2013 Design Judge of the weekly room reveals, alongside Jeremy Hansen Editor of Home Magazine. The Block NZ goes to air on Monday 26th August at 7.30pm.

The Auckland Town Hall
I worked happily with Janice on an unusual project demanding an understanding of, and sensitivity towards, interior design within the iconic heritage place of the Auckland Town Hall. The project was to adapt a key major room to a new use, and in doing so to recover something closer to the original look and feel. This included a considerable debate about how to strike an appropriate balance between modern needs, new design, and fidelity to heritage principles. I was very pleased with Janice’s willingness to embrace this challenge, and the creation of a result we can be all proud of. It would be a pleasure to work with Janice again on any similar project.”

Food Heroes

“Janice has worked with me for a couple of years on photoshoots for magazines and books. She is creative and enthusiastic, a dream to work with. Her biggest quality, to my mind, is that she knows where to stop – she lets the elements speak.”

Residential Project
“Janice came highly recommended as a talented and inspirational designer with an eye for detail and the unexpected. From the very beginning she was great to work with. She immediately understood what we were looking for and was able to translate our vision into something that works in a busy family household. The finished result far exceeded our expectations, was within budget and great quality. We also appreciated the way in which Janice assessed what we already had and made suggestions for how existing pieces could be updated to be included in the new design. This combined with the huge effort Janice put into sourcing great product meant we ended up with something truly unique. Janice clearly loves what she does and the results show her passion – working with her is not only inspirational but also a lot of fun.”
